Privacy

Time Gaia is a map and timeline of world history. You can explore all of it without an account, and we have built it to collect as little about you as it can. There are no advertisements and no tracking or analytics scripts, and we do not sell or rent anything about you to anyone.

If you just look around

• Your browser keeps a few preferences on your own device: light or dark theme, how the timeline is shown, whether you have dismissed the welcome note, and your choice about donation reminders. We use browser storage for these, and they are not sent to us.
• Our server sees your IP address with each request, as every website does. We use it to stop abuse, for example to limit how many new AI overviews one connection can ask for in an hour. Those counters expire within about an hour.

If you create an account

• We store your email address, the name you choose to show, and your password. The password is kept only as a one-way scrypt hash: we cannot read it, and neither could anyone who copied our database.
• Signing in sets one cookie, tg_session, which holds a random token and nothing else. For each signed-in browser we record when it signed in, its IP address and its browser name, so you and we can spot a sign-in that was not you.
• We keep the events you save as favourites, and the events and photos you add.

Events and photos you add

These are private when you add them. Only you, and the people who review submissions, can see them until they are approved. Photos are stored with Amazon Web Services. Please do not include anyone's private information, and only upload photos you took or have permission to share.

Donations

Donations are handled by Stripe. Your card details go straight to Stripe and never reach our servers. We record the amount, whether the payment went through, and, if you were signed in, which account it came from. Stripe's own privacy policy covers what Stripe does with your information.

Other services the site uses

• Cloudflare Turnstile checks that sign-ups and sign-ins come from a person, not a bot. It looks at signals from your browser and your IP address when you use those forms.
• TimeGaia AI, which writes the overviews marked AI, uses AI models run by outside companies. They are sent only public information about an event or a place, never anything about you, and some of them may use what they are sent to improve their models.
• Pictures of events are loaded from Wikimedia Commons, the page's fonts from Google Fonts, and one drawing library from cdnjs, run by Cloudflare. Your browser fetches these directly, so those services see your IP address as they would for any website.

Your choices

You can ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete your account and everything you added. Email the address below and we will do it within 30 days. Time Gaia is not meant for children under 13, and they should not create an account.
